About

This year, we are presenting: Newsies. Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

The Dolphin Show, the largest student-produced musical in the country, annually unites nearly 150 undergraduate administrators, designers, technicians, actors, and musicians to mount a professional-quality production in Cahn Auditorium. For 86 years, the final product has been a theatrical celebration shared among the Northwestern, Evanston, and Chicagoland communities. Past productions have included Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Footloose, the highest-grossing student-produced musical in the U.S.

The Dolphin Show provides the opportunity for students from all corners of campus the opportunity to work in a professional artistic environment. Every student, regardless of previous experience, has the chance to expand their skill set and learn what it means to be part of a high-functioning creative team. This spirit of joy and inclusion radiates far beyond Northwestern’s campus with over 3,000 people attending our show each year.

Dolphin’s scale demands a massive production budget, one that cannot be fulfilled by ticket sales and university funding alone. That’s where you come in, with the support from our community of friends, family, and alumni, Newsies will be one of the most vibrant, high-octane Dolphin Shows to date!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies tells the rousing story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. A story about community, change, and the necessity for us all to fight for justice, Newsies is told through thrilling dance numbers, impressive vocals, and promises to be a good time for all audience members.

A gift supports the students doing the work onstage and behind the scenes. It gives emerging artists and administrators an unmatched production experience, strengthens a vibrant community of collaborators across campus, and helps us create a truly unique musical theatre experience for our audiences.
