Witch by Jen Silverman is an inventive retelling of a Jacobean drama that poses the debate about how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by. When a charming devil arrives in Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their darkest wishes, Elizabeth should be his easiest target. However, this woman labeled a “witch” and cast out by the town is not so easily bought. As the devil returns to convince her, unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and the village is forever changed.

Directed by Talia Lawit, Witch is a play featured in Arts Alliance’s fall site-specific slot this upcoming quarter. Aside from giving Northwestern students the opportunity to produce, perform, design, and attend an award-winning play, Witch examines the impact of strict patriarchal expectations and asks how to cope with hopelessness within a broken system. Through accessible presentations of live performance, Northwestern students, as well as members of the Evanston and Chicagoland community, will be able to engage intellectually with these themes and promote further discussion with their peers.
