About

Arts Alliance is the oldest student arts organization at Northwestern. We are dedicated to producing free productions for our campus and Evanston community. We are proud to produce four mainstage productions and special events throughout the year that all speak directly to our mission and associated pillars. We continue to stay committed to creating art that reflects, deepens, and challenges the greater Northwestern community.

This production of Legally Blonde reimagines Elle Woods as an iconic 1990s Black woman navigating elite academic spaces. While Elle has long been accustomed to proximity to whiteness through privilege, wealth, and sorority culture, that bubble fractures when she arrives at Harvard Law. We believe this reflects the experiences of members of our Northwestern community. The production aims to affirm that Black women and other marginalized individuals do not need to conform to externally imposed expectations in order to succeed. At the same time, the project joyfully embraces Legally Blonde’s existing themes of love, sisterhood, empowerment, and humor.

We hope to reach the Northwestern population and beyond through this production. Student artists involved in the project will gain hands-on experience in the rehearsal room and production team. By working on a reimagined version of a beloved show, our team will be challenged to think deeply about how art reflects our community. Audience members will benefit from engaging with a production that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Legally Blonde invites viewers to see their own experiences reflected onstage, fostering connection, empathy, and conversation. By centering marginalized perspectives within a widely recognizable story, the project creates an inclusive theatrical experience.

To meet our production budget and fulfill the designs of our hardworking student designers, we will need the help from our community of friends, family, and alumni! To keep our production as accessible as possible to the student population and beyond, as we keep our tickets free for all audience members, we would love your support. Any amount is deeply appreciated. Share this link on social media, with your friends and family, and follow us @legallyblonde.nu to stay updated on our progress. Thank you and we hope to see you in June!

The benefits and services provided by Northwestern University’s student groups are available to all students without regard to any category protected by the law. The University believes different perspectives, experiences and backgrounds are critical to a dynamic and vibrant University community, and as such all students are welcome and encouraged to join each group. Any student interested in exploring establishing a new affinity group should contact SOA.
